Ches Penney, Founder and Chairman, Penney Group – February 28, 1932 – January 26, 2017

Our Founder and visionary will be forever missed. His work ethic, commitment to his community and fierce loyalty to his partners are his greatest legacy. Ches’ long and fruitful career produced companies which spanned multiple industries, covering everything from automobiles, heavy construction, energy services and real estate. Through his partnerships with many talented people, his strong leadership abilities and a lifetime of hard work, he successfully built one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest private commercial enterprises.

In recognition of his personal generosity and commitment to his community, Ches was named to the Order of Canada, the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador, and awarded an honorary doctorate from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Gail Penney, President, Penney Group

Prior to joining our group in 2005, Ms. Penney (M.Ed, MBA, ICD.D) taught in the public and tertiary education setting for 18 years. Her role within the group is varied. As President of Principal Holdings Ltd., Seven Lakes Developments Ltd. and Director of Pennecon Limited, Ms. Penney participates in an advisory or management role in the majority of the Group's holdings.

Ms. Penney is involved in a volunteer capacity with several community based groups including Junior Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Board of Directors, as Chair of the JA Business Hall of Fame Committee; the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, Newfoundland & Labrador Division as Vice Chair; and Lady Cove Women’s Choir as a Board Member.

Fred Taylor, Director, Penney Group

Mr. Taylor started his employment with Mr. Penney in August 1963 as Comptroller for the Penney Group, which included real estate holdings, car dealerships, a supermarket, a parts distribution chain and bowling alleys. He went into business on his own in 1970 to pursue construction and car dealership interests.

In August 1980, he rejoined the Penney Group of Companies and subsequently retired from his position as Vice President of Finance in 1998, but remained on as a Director and worked as a personal advisor and consultant to Mr. Penney. This relationship continues to this day.

Mr. Taylor was a partner with Mr. Penney in the offshore tankers and container shipping operations when he sold out to other interests in 2008. He received his C.A designation in 1962 and received his 50-year recognition pin for his service to the institute in 2012. Fred is a director of Penney Group Inc. and Pennecon Limited.


Mr. Murphy received his C.A. designation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Newfoundland in 1972.  He held various positions with Doane Raymond during his approximately 20 years with the company, including audit manager, manager of the Marystown, NL office, and then as a senior partner in the firm in 1992. Later in 1992, Mr. Murphy joined CHC Helicopters as Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Secretary.

Mr. Murphy joined the Penney Group of Companies in 1996 as the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, bringing his vast experience to our company, moving on to the role of Vice President in Pennecon Limited. Currently, Edward is the Senior Vice President of the Penney Group and also holds the title of Senior Vice President, Finance, Pennecon Limited.

Mr. White's professional life has consisted of several long-term positions, commencing with Grant Thornton Chartered Accountants in 1971 as a chartered accountant and audit manager and then as a partner of a Chartered Accountancy firm.

Mr. White joined Pennecon Limited in 2000 and is a senior member of the Management Team in the position of Chief Financial Officer. Jerry is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Newfoundland, a Member of the Canada Institute of Chartered Accountants, and is the past Treasurer of the 1996 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games.
